Sri Keshavji Gaudiya Math
Reconstruction Project

Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, INDIA

Our beloved Gurudeva, Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja, desired to rebuild Sri Keshavji Gaudiya Math during his physical manifestation, but due to some unavoidable legal situation, practically he could not fulfill his desire. To fulfill his last cherished desire, the members of Gaudiya Vedanta Samiti Trust (GVST) in January of 2022 resolved to demolish the building and rebuild it. Bhaktivedanta Nrsingha Maharaja along with Bhaktivedanta Madhava Maharaja are overseeing the project.

This historic temple was originally built 150 years ago as a dharmashala with an initial view to finish it only up to two stories. But, subsequently, as the needs of the tenants evolved, they randomly constructed at different phases two more stories. Proper engineering might not have been reported in those subsequent annexing phases. A structure which was initially proposed only as two storied, finally culminated in a four storied one.

In time, the manifestation of cracks in the walls and ceilings were clear pronouncement of incapacitation of proper load bearing ability. A life span of about 150 years is typical for brick-lime load bearing walls, and generally do not preserve much longer than that.

The building was repaired 5 or 6 times over a period of 25 years from 1979 to 2004, but eventually the premises had become dilapidated, sinking down, with complaints from neighbors about safety, and the realization that it was not a safe dwelling anymore for the brahmacaris, sannyasis and devotees in the Matha. It was recommended by professional engineers and building designers that a complete demolition and retrofitting take place.

The entire project will take 3 to 5 years. The Indian government has given a time limit of 5 years. We want to complete it in 3 years. It is located in the middle of the Mathura city, so much of the work cannot be done during the daytime due to the strict rules of the municipal government.

Srila Bhakti Prajnana Kesava Maharaja purchased this dharmashala building in December of 1954 and established his Gaudiya Math there. Srila Gurudeva Bhaktivedanta Narayana Goswami Maharaja lived and served his Gurudeva in this Math for more than 40 years, doing his bhajan and preaching there. He said many times that Mathura Math is my life & soul.

Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada took the renounced order in Mathura Keshavji Gaudiya Math from his dear godbrother, Acharya Kesari Bhakti Prajnana Kesava Maharaja. Swami Prabhupada stayed there for some time; bringing his Guara-Nitai deities there and started his preaching from this temple
